ABSTRACT
This study was described to examine the “Effects of parental attitude on the academic performance of children with intellectual disability in Oredo Local Government Area “. To guide this study three(3) research questions were raised. The Descriptive survey research design was used in conducting the study and a population was 50 comprising of parents of 17 children with intellectual disability in Ihogbe college and parents of 33 children with intellectual disability in Charilove Group Of Special Schools. However, the population will be directed towards one of the pairs of parents (either the father or the mother) making a total of 50 parents.
The instruments for the study were self-structured questionnaires by the researcher. The validity of the instrument was established by giving the research instrument to the researchers’ supervisor and two other experts in the field of the research study. The data obtained from the questionnaire were subjected to analysis using mean and standard deviation.
The findings highlight the significant influence of parents attitudes and lifestyle adjustments on the academic journey of children with intellectual disabilities. Guardian attitudes, especially certain aspects, strongly affect academic performance, while specific parental attitudes hinder academic development. Lifestyle adjustments made by parents also play a crucial role, with targeted interventions potentially yielding the most impact and Understanding these factors informs strategies to support the academic success of children with intellectual disabilities, emphasizing the need for interventions tailored to address parental attitudes and lifestyle adjustments
This study therefore recommends the implementation of educational programs and counseling services aimed at raising awareness among the public and parents of children with intellectual disabilities. These initiatives should emphasize understanding, positivity, and beneficial lifestyle adjustments to support the academic success of these children.
