EFFECTS OF PALM OIL MILL EFFLUENT ON THE GROWTH OF MICROALGAE

ABSTRACT

A study on the effects of oil palm mill effluent was carried out on the growth of two fresh water algae, Chlorella vulgaris and Dictyosphaerium pulchellum, was carried out for 14 days in the laboratory. The test microalgae was grown in seven culture vessels which were in triplicates. Different concentrations, 0%, 10%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% of the oil palm effluent were used. The Chu’s modified medium was used to grow the algae. The growth response of the Chlorella vulgaris and Dictyosphaerium pulchellum in the different concentrations was measured using a spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 750nm. The oil palm effluent was analyzed to determine its physiochemical parameters to show the alga's bioremediating potential. Descriptive statistics, inferential; one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) repeated measures, paired t-test and Turkey test were done using Microsoft excel 2010 and statistical package for social sciences SPSS 20. The results obtained showed that the growth of Chlorella vulgaris and Dictyosphaerium pulchellum was stimulated at lower concentrations of, 10% and 20% of the oil palm effluent while at 0% and higher concentrations, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% there was significant difference p<0.05 in the growth response of the microalgae.
