ABSTRACT
Medicinal Plants have recently become of great interest owing to their versatile applications. Several researches have been conducted on ways to check for renal injuries thereby producing drugs and searching for food supplement that could help treat the diseases. The aim of the study was to determine the effects Ocimum gratissimum aqueous leaf extract in Carbon tetrachloride induced kidney damage in adult Wistar rats. Thirty adult Wistar rats were used for the experiment. They were randomly assigned into six (6) groups, each group containing five (5) rats each. Group A served as control and were fed with standard animal feed and clean water ad libitum, Group B Rats were treated with oral administration of 250mg/kg body weight of Ocimum gratissimum aqueous leaf extract, Group C Rats were treated with oral administration of 250mg/kg body weight of Ocimum gratissimum aqueous leaf extract, Group D Rats were treated with oral administration of 250mg/kg body weight of Ocimum gratissimum aqueous leaf extract + 1.5ml of Carbon Tetrachloride, Group E were Rats were treated daily with oral administration of 1.5ml of Carbon Tetrachloride. All the animals were sacrificed 24 hours after last administration. Blood was collected from all animals via direct cardiac puncture and the biochemical markers viz: Na+, K+, Cl-, Creatinine and Urea were assessed as well as oxidative stress markers Catalase, Superoxide dismutase, Total protein and Malondialdehyde were also estimated. The Kidney from all the animals were harvested, then isolated and put in Formal Saline and then processed and stained using H&E for histological analysis. The results showed that Group D showed significant increase (P<0.05) of urea, creatinine, and malondialdehyde. There was a significant increase (P<0.05) of renosomatic index in Group C. The result showed that the dosage of Ocimum gratissimum aqueous leaf extract administered fairly exerted an ameliorative effect on CCl4 induced kidney damage.
