ABSTRACT

This research work is a study effect of mother tongue on English speakers of Esan language, the essence of this research is to outline how mother tongue are spoken  by the English speaker of Esan language  and how mother tonque are used in the day to day life of English speakers of Esan Language . This work talked about the effect of mother tongue on English speakers of Esan language,  Mother-tongue has been identified as a panacea for the acquisition of L2 in Nigeria, which for majority senior primary school pupil sit is English Language. Therefore, its importance should not be underestimated. This paper recommends that teachers of English  Language should be dedicated and patient in handling these children in developing their speaking skill as a foundation. Teachers should make effort in designing children friendly activities in class as regards to remedial drills in correcting errors transferred from mother-tongue according to the need of the ethnic group of an environment.
