For this study, 24 adult albino wistar rats were obtained, weighed and acclimatized and were randomly separated into four groups consisting of six rats each. the rats was separated into groups A, B, C and D with the control group as A and was separated while the other three groups were regarded as the experimental groups (B- 5g MSG in 500ml Distilled water, C- 8g MSG in 500ml Distilled water and D- 16g MSG in 500ml Distilled water) and various doses were orally administered to the rats with a dosage of 2.5ml of the solution. The rats were weighed at the end of each week. This was done for seven weeks. The results showed that there was no statistical significant change in RBC count. There was no significant effect in hemoglobin concentration in the RBC when compared from the control group(0.36g/dl) with the experimental groups like moderate dose(0.41g/dl) and high dose(0.49g/dl). However, there was a mild significant difference in hemoglobin concentration when compared from the control group with the low dosed group (0.76g/dl). There was significant decrease in WBC count when compared with the control group (3.78ul/ml) and the experimental groups (B- 2 99ul/ml, C- 1.12ul/ml and D- 0.98ul/ml). There was significant decrease in the lymphocyte count when compared from the control group (3.46ul/ml) and the experimental groups (B-2.81ul/ml, C-0.64ul/ml and D-0.92ul/ml). There was statistical significant decrease in monocyte concentration in WBC when compared from the control group (0.23ul/ml) with the experimental groups (C-0.18ul/ml and D-0.12ul/ml). There was no statistical significant effect in the blood electrolytes. There was a statistical significant increase in urinary electrolytes like sodium when compared from the control group (2.34) with experimental groups (C-13.01 and D-17.78). There was significant increase in urinary potassium when compared from the control group (16.43) with the experimental groups (B-22.36, C-21.86 and D-35.28). There was statistical significant increase in urinary bicarbonate when compared from the control group (5.61) with the experimental group (D-19.33) and reduced when compared with experimental groups (B-1.72 and C-4.00). There was statistical significant increase in urinary chloride when compared from the control group (0.95) with the experimental group (D-1.06) and reduced when compared with experimental groups (B-0.12 and C-0.37). The reduction in WBC count by MSG intake shows that it can weaken our immune system.
