ABSTRACT

Bioremediation, the use of biological organisms to eliminate environmental pollutants, has gained considerable attention due to its eco-friendly and sustainable approach. In recent years, nanotechnology has emerged as a promising avenue to enhance the bioremediation process. This research was aimed at investigating the enhancement of the bioremediation potential of Penicillum species with biologically synthesized magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgONPs). Penicillum species was isolated from agricultural soil. Phenotypic characterization was used to identify the fungal isolate. Magnesium oxide nanoparticles were synthesized using moringa (Moringa oleifera) leaf extract and magnesium nitrate. The biologically synthesized MgONPs were characterized with a UV-visible spectrophotometer. The bioremediation potential of Penicillum species was evaluated in different concentrations (10, 20, and 30%) of MgONPs used to supplement potato dextrose broth (PDB) contaminated with 5% waste engine oil.Temperature, pH, and total fungal viable count were recorded. The results showed that a combined action of MgO NPs and Penicillum species ledto a significant reduction in the concentration of targeted pollutants(waste engine oil). The findings of the study suggest that the nanoparticles appear to facilitate the enzymatic activities of Penicillum species, resulting in improved pollutant degradation efficiency. This synergistic effect offers a promising pathway for the remediation of contaminated ecosystems.
