ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the hydroethanolic extract of Chasmantheradependens on lipid profile in a CCl4-induced toxicity model. This research was carried using an animal model of 25 Wistar white Male rats divided into five groups, which included; normal control group, negative control group (no treatment),positive control group (Silymarin), and two C. dependens treated groups of different doses (250mg/kg and 500mg/kg)]. Using standard methods, the weekly weight of the rats, the inducement with the toxicant (CCL4) and the appropriate dosage of both the standard drugs and the extract were determined. The data was analysed using One-way analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Duncan’s test of significance. The results from the analysis showed a significant reduction (p<0.05) in lipid profile parameters (Total Cholesterol and Triglycerides) in the treated groups (Groups 4&5) compared to the negative control group (Group 2). More so, findings also revealedthat, there was no significant differences (p>0.05) between groups 1, 3, 4 and 5 in the parameters above. There was no significant differences (p>0.05) in the parameters (HDLC, LDLC) between the treated groups (Groups 4&5) and the Negative control (Group 2). The extract showed some significant improvement in the lipid profile markers againstCCl4 induced toxicity, although more studies should be carried out to confirm these claims.
