SUMMARY
The practice of female genital mutilation comprises all procedures involving the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.1 These procedures could mean piercing, cutting, removing, or sewing closed all or part of a girl’s or woman’s external genital organs with the use of rudimentary tools by some designated community members or medical personnel.2 There are no health benefits to mutilation of girls and women. Contrary to the beliefs and benefits attached to it by practicing individuals or communities, it is harmful and can lead to immediate health risks or long-term complications to women’s physical, mental and sexual health and well-being.
