ABSTRACT
The purpose of the study was to determine the Effect of Excessive Intake of Alcohol Among Undergraduate Student In The University Of Benin. To achieve the purpose of this study four (4) research questions were raised to guide the study.
Descriptive survey design was adopted for this study, the simple random sampling technique was adopted to select Three Hundred and Eighty one (381) undergraduates from the total population of about 33,342 students (Both Male and Females) in the thirteen faculties in the University of Benin. To give answers to the research questions, structured questionnaire was constructed which contains items that provided demographic data and item to elicit responses to the research question, for the goal of validation, the research instrument was given to the researcher’s project supervisor and two other experts of my department to ascertain face validity of the instrument ,corrections made was incorporated. The instruments was subjected to Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation coefficient. To achieving the method of data analysis includes the descriptive statistics using the mean to describe the sample with a single value that represents the center of the data and also standard deviation of how the dispersed the data is in relation to the mean.
From the finding of the study it was evidence that:
Excessive drinking can cause alcohol hepatitis, insomnia, depression and can increase the risk of many forms of cancer.
Alcohol consumption is normalized within the university culture and high prevalence of alcohol consumption among undergraduates has led to liver disease.
Peers, family members and friends contribute to the behavioural and socio-environmental factors that influence the excessive intake of alcohol.
Undergraduates drink at parties so they can know how it feels to be drunk and carefree like their friends, to fit in with their friends and have fun. Lastly campus policies and regulations are effective in controlling alcohol consumption.
