ABSTRACT
Negro pepper (Xylopia aethiopica), a commonly utilized spice and medicinal plant in various cultures, possesses a diverse array of bioactive compounds with potential implications for modulating inflammation. The review comprehensively explores existing research, encompassing studies investigating the impact of Xylopia aethiopica on pro-inflammatory markers, and associated physiological outcomes in pregnant Wistar rats. The assessment of these studies contributes to a deeper understanding of the potential therapeutic applications of Negro pepper in mitigating inflammation during pregnancy, with implications for maternal and fetal health. Forty adult, healthy, female wistar rats were used for the study and these rats were divided randomly into 2 phases: Germinal phase (gestation day 0-7) and Embryonic phase (gestation day 7-14) with 4 groups for Each phase: Groups A, B, C, and D with D being the control group. The animals were allowed to acclimatized for 2 weeks for proper adaptation to their new environment and were weighed weekly. At the end of the experiment, samples of uterus were collected and analysed for TNF -a and IL-6 using ELISA. Results of biochemical analysis were expressed as mean ± standard deviation Analysis was carried out with graph pad statistical software version 8.1 using analysis of variance (ANOVA).
