ABSTRACT
This study examines the effects of calcium carbonate and clam (Egeria radiata) shells on water acidity and its effect on the fertilization and hatchability of fish eggs and survival of the fry of Clarias gariepinus. A concentration of 7.2g for five treatments viz; calcium carbonate(CACO3) [T1], unburnt uncrushed clam shells (UUCS) [T2], burnt uncrushed clan shells (UCCS) [T3] burnt crushed clam shells (BCCS) [T4], burnt uncrushed clam shells (BUCS) [T5] and the control (C). The use of unburnt and burnt crushed clam shells for a maximum of 4 weeks as an organic buffer to replace the conventional synthetic calcium carbonate in reducing acidity in water to ensure higher hatchability and survival of Clarias gariepinus fry was effective in this study. Underground water are usually acidic and so should be treated with an organic buffer (Egeria radiata shells) before use in a fish hatchery. T3 and T4 effected similar changes just as T1(7.80) in increasing the water pH to 7.40 at week 1 for T3 and 7.30 at week 1 for T4. Similar changes also effected across week 2 and 3 respectively.
