EFFECTS OF CAFFEINE ON BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVELS AND BODY WEIGHT IN NORMAL AND DIABETIC RATS

ABSTRACT

Caffeine is a widely consumed stimulant present in most beverages. Considering the increased consumption of caffeinated products, it is important to understand how it affects blood glucose and body weight in normal and diabetic conditions. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of administration of caffeine on blood glucose and body weight in normal and diabetic rats. Thirty (30) wistar rats were divided into 4 groups: normal control rats, diabetic control rats, normal rats treated with caffeine, diabetic rats treated with caffeine. Rats were treated for 3 weeks, after which results of treated rats were compared with normal control group and diabetic control group. All data were analysed using Graph pad prism, paired sample t-test and ANOVA. The results were presented as Mean ± SEM (Standard Error of Mean) and P-values less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results showed no significant difference in blood glucose level of normal rats treated with caffeine when compared with normal control, as well as in diabetic rats treated with caffeine when compared with diabetic control. It was also observed that diabetic rats treated with caffeine showed a significant increase in body weight when compared with diabetic control, but an insignificant decrease in body weight of normal rats treated with caffeine when compared with normal control. It is concluded that caffeine has no effect on blood glucose levels in both normal and diabetic rats, however it has the potential to increase body weight in diabetic rats.
