ABSTRACT
Zinc is an essential trace element for human, animals and microorganisms and it's necessary for prenatal and postnatal development. Zinc is involved in a variety of biological processes, as a structural, catalytic and intercellular signaling component. Picralima nitida, a member of the Apocynaceae family is a West African plant with varied application in African folk medicine. It is called Osu-Igwe in Igbo, and Osu in Edo. Various parts of the plants have been employed ethnomedicinally as remedy for fever, hypertension, jaundice, dysmenorrheal, gastrointestinal and reproductive disorders, malaria etc. This study findings will shed light on the potential impact of Picralima nitida fruit pulp extract on laboratory rat blood zinc concentration. A total of Thirty-five (35) male wistar rats were used for this experiment. Group A (dosage of 400mg/kg), Group B (dosage of 250mg/kg), Group C (dosage of 200mg/kg), Group D (dosage of 100mg/kg), Group E (Control). With Implication to human health, this study intends to add important insights to the body of knowledge already available about natural dietary treatment effects on blood zinc concentration.
