ABSTRACT

Dibutyl phthalate, DBP- C16H22O4, is a phthalate ester that is the diester obtained by the formal condensation of the carboxy groups of the phthalic acid with two molecules of butan-1-ol. Although used extensively as a plasticizer, it is a ubiquitous environmental contaminant, a teratogenic agent, a plasticizer, a metabolite and an EC 3.2.1.20 (alpha-glucosidase) inhibitor. It is a phthalate ester and a diester and is known to have relatively low acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term) toxicity effect in animals such as rats. Hunteria umbellata is a medicinal plant with a long standing use in the treatment of various ailments in Nigeria and Ghana. It is known for its ameliorating effect on chemically induced damaged organs such as the kidneys. Biochemical and gravimetric analysis were conducted to determine the differential effect of aqueous-methanol seed extract of Hunteria umbellata on the damaged kidneys of dibutyl phthalate-induced male wistar rats. Thirty-five male albino wistar rats, weighing between 220 g and 275 g, were divided into five groups of seven rats each and were fed with rat chow for four weeks along with water ad libitum.
