EFFECTS OF AQUEOUS EXTRACT OF Xylopia aethiopica ON THE BONE MARROW OF ADULT WISTAR RATS

ABSTRACT

Xylopiaaethiopica is an aromatic plant that grow up to a tree of about 20cm tall and 60cm in diameter. It is popularly known as Negro pepper, Ethiopia pepper or grains of salim. The plant extract has been reported to have high level of phenols, flavonoids and alkaloids. The aim of this study is to determine the dose dependent effects of aqueous extract of Xylopiaaethiopica on the body weight, blood parameters and histology of the experimental animals. Twenty Wistar rats were used. They were divided into four groups of five rats each. Group A served as the control group, Group B was administered with 250mg/kg body weight of the extract, Group C was administered with 500mg/kg body weight of the extract, and Group D was administered with 1000 mg/kg body weight of the extract. All the groups were given feed and water ad litum. Some of the materials used are measuring glass cylinder, 5ml syringes and 1ml syringes, dissecting set, cotton wool and disposable gloves, Light microscope, Thread and masking tape. This experiment spanned for a period of 56 days, after which the fermur bone and blood samples was excised. Blood samples were obtained for analysis while the bone was fixed in Bouin’s fluid for histopathological analysis. There was statistical increase (p< 0.05) in body weight in all the groups, the result showed no significant difference (P>0.05) in the final body weight compared to the control. The result of this research shows that the extract has no significant change in body weight when compared to the control group. The blood analysis showed no significant difference across all the blood parameters analysed though there was a steady increase across the groups in mean corpuscular haemoglobin level and platelets distribution. In the histological analysis we observed that the megakaryocytes and myeloid erythroid series in groups administered with 250mg/kg, 500mg/kg and 1000mg/kg when compared to the control group. These findings hypothesized that the extract given may serve a booster for myeloid erthyroid series and tonic for platelet width distribution.
