ABSTRACT
The leaves have about as much potassium as a banana, and about the same amount of vitamin C as an orange. It also has calcium, protein, iron, and amino acids, which help your body heal and build muscle. It's also packed with antioxidants, substances that can protect cells from damage and may boost your immune system. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of moringa on the heart of wistar rats. This work involved the use of an experimental study design, consisting of twenty-four (24) adult Wistar rats weighing 160-210kg , separated into four (4) groups; A, B, C and D with each group having six (6) Wistar rats of randomized patterns for administration and were all weighed prior to it.They were grouped into four groups Group A rats served as control, group B rats were treated daily with 200mg/kg of moringa extract(low dose), group C rats were treated daily with oral administration of 400mg/kg body weight of aqueous extract of Moringa(Intermediate dose) and , group D rats were treated daily with oral administration of 800mg/kg body weight of aqueous extract of Moringa(High dose). After administration (twenty-seven (27) days), the animals were sacrificed, organs harvested and processed for assays according to established methods. Data from the animals were subjected to statistical analysis using GraphPad prism version 8.1 statistical package and relevant statistical values were obtained. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was carried out and data were presented as mean ± standard error of mean (SEM). Least significant difference (LSD) post-hoc test was used. Values of P<0.05 were considered statistically significant. The statistical values obtained were converted into graphical representation in form of bar charts. The result for the experiment is as follows: ˟P < 0.05 indicates significant difference compared with control, there was a significant decrease in 200mg/kg compared with control. However, there were no significant changes in the 400mg/kg and 800mg/kg doses compared with control respectively,There were no significant changes in the different doses compared with control respectively,There were no significant changes in the different dose compared with control respectively.On histological analysis the group treated with 200mg/kg body weight of moringa extract showed normal cardiomyocyte bundles,and normal cardiac vein, groups treated with 400mg/kg of body weight of moringa extract showed normal cardiomyocyte bundles active vascular congestion and dilatation, groups given 800mg/kg of body weight of moringa extract showed normal cardiomyocyte bundles and normal coronary artery.This shows the cardioprotective effect of Moringa extract.
