ABSTRACT
Many secondary plant metabolites have been shown to possess antioxidant activities, improving the effects of oxidative stress on organs. This study evaluated the effects of aqueous extract of date palm (phoenix dactylifera) on blood glucose level of adult wistar rat. Fifteen adult Wistar rats were divided randomly into three groups. Group A which served as untreated control received water daily for 30 days. Group B Animals were administered with low dose of date palm extract 50mg/kg body weight with feed and clean water, daily for 30 days. Animals were administered with high dose of date palm extract 250mg/kg body weight with feed and clean water, daily for 30 days. At the last day of the experiment, the animals were weighed and sacrificed on anaesthetize using chloroform. The abdominal cavity was accessed via midline incision and the pancreas was dissected out, weighed and fixed in 10% buffered formal saline in readiness for routine histological procedure. Blood samples were immediately collected from the descending abdominal aorta with a sterile needle and homogenized in a lithium heparin bottle to determine the blood glucose level of the experimental animals. Histopathological examination of the pancreas were also done and the observations recommended the marked protective effect of Phoneix dactylifera against high blood glucose level.
