ABSTRACT

The fact that nanoparticles are widely used in a variety of industrial and biological applications has attracted a lot of attention. However, concerns regarding their potential toxicity have prompted extensive research into identifying strategies to mitigate their adverse effects. This study aimed to investigate the effects of Al2O3 nanoparticles co-administered with vitamin C on haematological parameters and inflammatory responses in male wistar rats. In the current investigation, male wistar rats were given intraperitoneal doses of (Al2O3) 70 mg/kg, 70 mg/kg + Vit. C 100 mg/kg, 70 mg/kg + Vit. C 200 mg/kg, 70 mg/kg + Vit. C 500 mg/kg body weight, while vitamin C was administered by oral gavage over a period of seven (7) days. Using established techniques, haematological parameters such as the number of red blood cells, white blood cells, haemoglobin concentration, and platelets were assessed. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was utilized to measure the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in order to analyse the inflammatory responses. The results revealed that co-administration of vitamin C with Al2O3 nanoparticles, particularly at a dosage of 200 mg/kg, significantly attenuated the toxic effects induced by Al2O3 nanoparticles on haematological parameters. Alteration in the number of red blood cells, white blood cells, haemoglobin concentration, and platelets induced by Al2O3 nanoparticles, were reduced by vitamin C administration thus indicating its protective effects against nanoparticle-induced haematological toxicity. Results indicate that co-administration of vitamin C, particularly at 200 mg/kg, mitigated Al2O3 nanoparticle-induced alterations in haematological parameters and exerted anti-inflammatory effects. These results imply that vitamin C supplementation could serve as a preventative measure against Al2O3 nanoparticle toxicity.
