ABSTRACT
These studies ascertain the effect of value addition in the livelihood of cassava and plantain farmers in Edo State. A total of 90 respondents were examined using a well structured questionnaire. Data were analysed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and correlation studies. The result shows that more of the farmers were between the ages of (25-34) years, majority (82%) were married with a mean farm size of 5 hectares and (41.11%) had primary education. The major source of information was through friends (x=3.17), internet (x=3.14) and posters (x= 3.10). The major problem encountered by respondents was lack of loans (x=3.6), inadequate labour (x=3.51) and storage (x=3.49). Hypotheses were tested using correlation analysis and t-test statistics. The correlation result indicated that age (r=-0.399), sex (r=0-215), farm size (r=0.308), and experience (r=-0.326) were significantly related to adoption of value addition. There was also a significant difference on effect of adoption of cassava value addition on welfare of farmers. It was recommended that provision of market, equipment and facilities be put in place to ensure enhance adoption of value addition of cassava/plantain product.
