EFFECT OF SUGAR ON THE VEGETATIVE GROWTH OF Volvariella volvacea

ABSTRACT

Mushrooms are macrofungus with distinct fruiting bodies, large enough to be seen with the naked eye. The paddy straw mushroom, Volvariella volvacea is an edible fungus native to the tropical and sub - tropical regions. The study is aimed at evaluating the vegetative growth of the Volvariella volvacea vegetatively on four different illumination regimes, using two different media. The plates were inoculated with the mushroom on potato dextrose agar and yam dextrose agar and then kept in four different places, which were: daylight inside a room, complete darkness inside a room, daylight outside and complete darkness outside. The results showed that the culture kept inside the room in daylight grew well than the others while the others kept outside did not grow well which could be due to the high temperature of the environment. It could be recommended that light and temperature ranging from 29⁰C – 40⁰C would be suitable for growing Volvariella volvacea vegetatively.
