ABSTRACT
The research project is titled “The effect of strike action on the academic performance of students in university of Benin”. The purpose of this study is to determine the negative effect of strike action on the students in university of Benin. Based on the purpose of this study, four research questions were raised to properly scrutinize the action of the strike. The review of related literature was done to provide a good basis for the conclusion of the work. The sample consists of 121 students from the department of adult and non-formal education university of Benin. A simple random sampling techniques was adopted to carry out this research. The questionnaire which was tested and validated was adopted as the instrument for data collection. Data collected from the questionnaire was analyzed using tables, frequency, counts and simple percentage.
From the data collected from the respondents (adult and non-formal education students) it was deduced that the major causes of strike action in Nigeria public universities include improper remuneration, revitalization of universities, implementation of the UTAS system as the method of salary payment, autonomy for Nigerian Universities. Strike action affects the academic performance of the students. The strike action also, has not been able to meet up with the demands of the lecturers in Nigeria public universities. Students find it devastating whenever they are on strike and will not be able to cope well after resumption. And so, the perception of students about strike is not a gratifying one.
It was recommended that Academic staff union of Nigeria University should look for an alternative way of dialoguing with the federal government on their demands as it is evident that strike action are no longer effective in meeting their demands from the governments. Academic staff union of universities should endeavor to reconcile with the government as strike actions are affecting the academic performance of the students.
