ABSTRACT

This study investigates the influence of Spent Lubricating Oil (SLO) and its distinct fractions on Zea mays indurata, a specific variety of corn. Various parameters, including Total Antioxidant Potential (TAP), Total Phenolic Content (TPC), and Total Flavonoid Content (TFC), were measured and quantified. The results revealed significant variations in the phytochemical composition and antioxidant potential among the SLO fractions. The water-insoluble fraction of SLO displayed the highest TAP (13.00 mgGAE/g), indicating the presence of lipophilic antioxidants. In contrast, the water-soluble fraction possessed the greatest TPC (58.00 mgGAE/g), highlighting its potential as a source of natural antioxidants. The whole spent lubricating oil extract exhibited a noteworthy amount of flavonoids with a TFC of 50.00 mgQE/g, suggesting versatility for diverse applications.These findings suggest promising avenues for the development of natural antioxidants and bioactive compounds suitable for food products, nutraceuticals, and skincare formulations. Furthermore, this research contributes to sustainable waste management practices by repurposing SLO into valuable and environmentally friendly applications. This study underscores the potential of SLO and its fractions to produce eco-friendly, health-promoting materials with a wide range of practical uses.
