ABSTRACT
Antioxidants and phytochemicals are plant-derived chemicals, which are beneficial to human health and disease. They are naturally occurring in the medicinal plants, vegetables and grains. Researchers have identified antioxidant activities and phytochemical contents in the seeds of brown sorghum. The present study was aimed at determining the effects of spent lubricating oil on the total antioxidant power (TAP), total flavonoid content (TFC) and total phenolic content (TPC) of S. bicolor. The SLO was fractionated into different fractions viz: water-soluble fraction (WSF), water insoluble fraction (WISF) and whole spent lubricating oil (WSLO) which were used to contaminate a cotton wool soil base for planting the brown sorghum seeds and samples were collected within a period of fourteen (14) days. Quantitative analysis of the aqueous extract showed the concentration of the total antioxidant power, total phenolic content and total flavonoid content to be 20 mgGAE/g and 24 mgGAE/g respectively. The concentration of the WISF extract were (5.00,32.00 and 12.00) mgGAE/g While that of the WSLO extract were (5.00,32.00,12.00) mgGAE/g jnfor TAP, TPC and TFC respectively. Both extracts exhibited antioxidant and phytochemical properties, but the water-soluble fraction extract was found to be higher than the whole spent lubricating oil extract and water insoluble fraction extract with respect to the parameters investigated.
