ABSTRACT
Zea Mays is one of the most important cereal crops grown worldwide, it is an important crop that is a staple food in a lot of cultures around the world and is a third leading crop of the world after rice and wheat, Zea Mays is a major important cereal crop being cultivated in the rainforest and the derived savannah zones of Nigeria, it has been in the diet of Nigerians for centuries and though it started as a subsistence crop it has gradually become a more important crop. Zea Mays has now risen to a commercial crop on which many agro-based industries depend on as raw materials. The effect of spent Lubricating oil on the root length of maize (Zea mays L.) (var. indentata and var. Saccharata) was studied in a pot experiment using different fractions of spent Lubricating oil. The spent lubricating oil was collected from a generating set while servicing it and was fractionated using a magnetic stirrer. The values for WISF, WSF, WSLO was significantly lower than that of the control and there was minimal increase in root length. This research carried out on Zea mays showed that contamination by spent lubricating oil reduces the growth and development of Zea mays plant parts. The indiscriminate disposal of spent lubricating oil should be discouraged.
