ABSTRACT
This study was conducted at screen house of experimental Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Benin, Benin City to evaluate the nutrient content and uptake of Amarantus grown on spent engine polluted soil remediated with liquid organic fertilizer. The study in involved three levels of spent oil polluted soil (0, 5, and 10%) and four organic fertilizer (control water) cattle dung, poultry manure and rabbit manure. Data were collected on soil physical chemical properties before cropping with Amaranth, dry matter production, nutrient content and uptakes. Results showed that soil polluted with spent engine oil had higher bulk density and tend to increased with increasing level of pollution. Application of liquid organic fertilizer decreased bulk density and increased porosity. Soil pH and nutrients decreased with increase in level of spent engine oil pollution. Dry matter, crop growth rate and net assimilation rate decreased with increasing level of spent engine oil pollution. Liquid organic fertilizer application increased dry matter, crop growth rate and net assimilation rate. Soil polluted at 5% spent oil and remediated with rabbit manure had the highest dry matter at six weeks after sowing. However, net assimilation rate was at peak in unpolluted soil treated with liquid cattle dung. Increasing level of spent engine oil pollution further decreased the nutrient content and uptake of Amarantth. However, liquid organic fertilizer increased nutrient content and uptake. Pb content was not detected in unpolluted soil and increased with increasing level of spent engine oil pollution in the plant. However, the application of liquid organic fertilizer reduced its content in plant up polluted soil treated with liquid poultry manure had the highest N,P and K uptake.
