ABSTRACT

A study of the effect of soft drink bottling waste water effluent from a disposal site at Iguosa, on Lemna paucicostata (Duckweed) was experimented. The plant was exposed to different treatment (concentrations) 0% (control), 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%. Waste water concentration for 14 days. Aquatic plants density, chlorophyll content and fresh weight were observed. Physicochemical parameters of waste water before and after exposure of test macrophytes were analyzed. Phytoremediation ability of Lemna paucicostata was also assessed. Reduction in waste water concentration gave a progress in the growth of macrophytes density. Chlorophyll content from different wave length increased. The constituent of the waste water changed after termination of the experiment, pH, Biological Oxygen Demand, salinity, nitrate, Total Dissolved Solid, conductivity increased after exposure of Lemna paucicostata to waste water concentrations. Sulphate level reduced in amount after termination.
