EFFECT OF POTASSIUM ADAPTATION ON RENAL FUNCTIONS OF WISTAR RATS

ABSTRACT

This study was aimed at evaluating the effect of potassium adaptation on renal functions of wistar rats. Ten (10) Wistar rats weighing 130g-170g were used for the study. They were divided into 2 groups: control and test groups (n=5). The test group received potassium chloride (0.75%) in their drinking water for a period of 5 weeks while the control group received normal water ad libitum. At the end of five (5) weeks, urine sample was collected, the animals were anesthetized and blood, kidney samples were collected for evaluation of creatinine, GFR and histology. The result showed no significant difference (P>0.05) in creatinine and glomerular filtration rate but there were changes in the histology of kidneys of the wistar rats which included vasodilation and interstitial congestion. Conclusively, potassium adaptation has no effect on creatinine and GFR but a structural change in the renal tissues.
