ABSTRACT

The general concept of human posture refers to “the carriage of the body as a whole, the attitude of the body, or the position of the limbs. It is the position in which we hold our body upright against gravity while standing, sitting or lying down. Inspiratory volume is the amount of additional air that you can inspire following a normal tidal inspiration. In a normal male, this volume is approximately 3L. To investigating the effect of posture and increasing inspiratory volume on peak inspiratory flow rate, pulse rate, heart rate, vital capacity, blood pressure and tidal volume in male human subject. Human subjects were used for this study. A group of 15 males between the age of 18 to 25 years. All male subjects were located within the University of Benin, Ugbowo, Benin City. For each subject, the study was conducted over a short period of 1 hour and 30 minutes. However, the study was conducted for three (3) weeks. The experiment was divided into two phases: (a) Measurement of lung volume and capacity (b) Measurement of blood pressure, heart rate and pulse rate. Statistical analysis was done using graph pad prism version 9.4.1, results were presented as mean using ± standard error of mean. One way ANOVA (Analysis of variance) was used to compare, p value of less than (<) 0.05 was considered as statistically significance. In conclusion, this research revealed that there is decrease in all parameters in lying posture, that is, due to lesser gravitational pull on abdominal contents and less force to pump blood as it is on the same level as the rest of the body.
