ABSTRACT
This study examined the effect of piracy technology on box office a study of cinemas in Benin City. The study was built around Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Perception theory and the Uses and Gratification theory as its theoretical framework. The study adopted the survey research method as its research design and employed the questionnaire as data collection instrument for the study. One hundred copies of questionnaire were administered to respondents using the multi-staged random sampling which comprised of the purpose sampling, stratified sampling and the simple random sampling techniques. Findings from the study showed that although people in Benin City are highly exposed to movies, they have a poor disposition towards going to see movies in cinemas. Therefore, they prefer to download movies online or purchase pirated copies from movie vendors. Findings also showed that movie piracy is very much prevalent in our society as people in Benin City do have limited knowledge about movie piracy. The implication of this from the findings in that piracy affects movie sales. The study recommended awareness campaigns should be carried out via various channels to enlighten the public on the dangers of movie piracy. It also recommended that strict laws should be put in place to punish movie pirates and that piracy-detection software should be used monitor and track online piracy.
