ABSTRACT

Living tissues respond to damage with inflammation, which is primarily an immune response and is involved in the development of several medical disorders. Dysregulated inflammatory response is likewise linked to a number of other diseases, often including infection/sepsis, trauma, inflammatory bowel disease, chronic wounds, rheumatologic disorders, and asthma. These diseases include cancer, diabetes, and obesity. This investigation's goal is to determine whether Picralima nitida's methanol extract has any anti-inflammatory properties. The Apocynaceae family includes Picralima nitida (stapf), often known as Akuamma. It is primarily found in Africa's forested regions, including the ivory coast, Uganda, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Nigeria. Disease free plant samples (by physical examination) of Picralima nitida fruits were purchase from oba market in Oredo local government area in Benin city, Edo state Nigeria. Absolute methanol solvent was use to extract one kilogram of the powder. Acute toxicity and phytochemicals investigation were carried out using standard procedures. Acute inflammatory study was carried out using egg albumin and carrageenan induced inflammations in rats, while chronic inflammation study was carried out using formalin induced inflammation in the paw of rats. The result obtained revealed that the lather dose(LD) 50 for extract is greater than 400 mg/kg. The phytochemicals present were glocoside, carbohydrates, saponins, flavonoid, phenolic, eugenols, terpenes, reducing sugar alkaloid, steroid and tannin. The result from the acute and chronic inflammation revealed that the plant extract to be active in the result of paw size induced by egg albumin, carrageenan and formalin.
