Xylopia aethiopia (X.E) commonly called negro pepper, is an evergreen aromatic tree growing up to 15-30 m high. It has been reported useful in treatment of anenorhea in female, which could potential contribute to the overall blood health. However more research is needed to understand the specific impact on hematological parameters during pregnancy in wistar rats. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of negro pepper extract on some hematological parameters during pregnancy in wrister rats. Forty adult, healthy, female wistar rats were used for this. The rats were mated with male rats on their estrous day, the presence of vagina smear the following morning designated day 0 of pregnancy. The pregnant rats were grouped into four groups (A, B, C and D). Group A serve as control, while B, C and D served as test group and were given the extract of Negro pepper for 7 days (Embryonic phase of pregnancy) while control took water and grower mash only. After the last administration, the rats were put to sleep with chloroform in a jar and blood samples were collected into heparinized bottles using 5ml syringe for the various heamatological analysis. Results of the Hematological analysis were expressed as mean ± (SEM) analysis was carried out. The one-way analysis of the variance (ANOVA) was used to analyze the data. Results shows in the Embryonic phases that there was a significant increase in 0.5ml/kg compared with control, though there were no significant differences in 0.25ml/kg and 1.0ml/kg compared with control in the white blood cell count. It was also observed that there was no significant differences in all other Hematological parameters measured in this study compared with the control of rats in the Embryonic phases. In conclusion negro pepper extract elicit boost in the red bood cell count which is a reason it used as a postpartum tonic after pregnancy.
