EFFECT OF MONTELUKAST AND PREDNISOLONE ON ANTIOXIDANTS LEVELS

ABSTRACT

Oxidative stress and airway inflammation are the hallmarks of asthma, a common long-term respiratory illness. Although the management of asthma with Montelukast and Prednisolone has been well researched, there is still little information available on their precise effects on antioxidant levels in the setting of asthma. The work's objective is to find out how prednisolone and montelukast affect the levels of antioxidants in sprague-dawley rats with asthma. Four groups of 180–250g Sprague Dawley rats were used to produce asthma: control, negative control, montelukast group, and prednisolone group. Ovalbumin was used to cause asthma in the control group. Each test group had twenty rats, for a total of five. Throughout the experiment, the control group was fed regular food and drink, while the other groups were subjected to aluminum hydroxide and Ovalbumin (OVA, egg albumin grade II) concentrations to cause asthma. Following this, the groups got treatment with Montelukast and Prednisolone. Following the experiment, samples of blood and tissue were taken for the antioxidants test. When compared to the control and negative control groups, prednisolone and montelukast do not significantly alter total protein, superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, or total antioxidant capacity (P>0.05). When comparing the montelukast group to the control and negative control groups, there was a statistically significant drop in the glutathione parameter (P<0.05). However, there was no significant change seen when prednisolone was administered. In summary, the following measures show no statistically significant differences between the Montelukast and Prednisolone groups and the control and negative control group: total protein, glutathione peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase, and total antioxidant capacity. Prednisolone shows no statistical significance when compared to the control and negative control groups, whereas Montelukast seems to have a statistically significant drop in glutathione when compared to those groups.
