ABSTRACT
Man has learnt to depend on plants in order to provide solutions to the myriad of health problem plaguing him. Ocimumgratissimum (OG) has been described as a plant easily available to communities and commonly utilized for the treatment of a range of diseases in numerous pharmacological surveys. Ocimum gratissimum is a member of the Lamiaceae family. The aim of this study is to discuss the effect of ocimum gratissimum in serum lipid profile of albino male wistar rats. The effect of methanolic extract of Ocimum gratissimum on serum lipid profile of Wister rats was studied. Twenty Male Adult Wistar rats with weights ranging between 140-170g were used. The rats were divided into four groups; with group one as the control group.Increasing doses (100mg, 300 and 500mgkg-1 body weight) of the extract were administered orally to the other three groups for a period of four weeks. The extract displayed a significant increase (p<0.05) in total cholesterol levels as well as LDL in low dose and HDL in high dose when compared with the normal control and other groups. Data was analysed using Graph pad statistical software version 8.1 and results analysed were presented in mean +/- SEM (Standard Error of Mean) and paired using Student t-test. The P-values <0.05 were considered statistically significant. In conclusion, the effect of the methanolic extract of O. gratissimum might be based on a dose dependant ratio with the high dose showing a significant effect on the HDL level in Wistar rats.
