ABSTRACT
Jatropha curcas is a plant widely utilized in traditional medicine and as a food source. This study investigated the phytochemical composition of J. curcas leaves and evaluated the effect of its methanolic extract on hematological parameters, specifically urea and creatinine levels, in albino Wistar rats. Twenty-four albino rats, weighing between 150g and 170g, were divided into four groups of six rats each. Group 1 served as the control and received no extract. Groups 2, 3, and 4 were fed a grower's mash pellet and administered varying concentrations of the methanolic leaf extract (100mg, 200mg, and 300mg, respectively) daily for 14 days. After the 14-day treatment period, blood samples were collected from each rat via the abdominal aorta and heart for analysis of serum urea and creatinine concentrations. The results showed that the methanolic extract of J. curcas significant at P< 0.05 reduced ALT, AST, ALP levels in a dose-dependent manner compared to the control group. These findings suggest potential hepatoprotective effects of the J. curcas methanolic leaf extract, in line with traditional claims of its therapeutic applications for hepatic health. Further research is warranted to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and identify safe dosages for potential medicinal use.
