ABSTRACT
This experiment was conducted at the screen house of the Department of Soil Science and Land Management, University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria to examine the effect of melon peels as an organic amendment material in the growth of maize (Zea mays L.). It examined the effects of melon peels on the physical, chemical and microbial properties of the soil. The experiment was replicated three times with four treatments; T1 (control), T2 (3g of melon peel/6kg soil), T3 (6g of melon peel/6kg soil) and T4 (9g of melon peel/6kg soil) of melon peels. The parameters measured for the maize plants were plant height, leaf area, stem girth, and number of leaves. After 8 weeks, the experiment was terminated and soil samples were collected from the rhizosphere of the maize plant and analyzed for physical, chemical, and microbial properties. Result obtained from the experiment shows that the application of melon peels did not have pronounced effect on the growth rate of the maize as there were no significant differences between the treatments.
