EFFECT OF LIGHTING ON AMPLITUDE OF ACCOMMODATION

ABSTRACT

 Inappropriate lighting level causes digital eye strain (DES) among smartphone uses. These visual symptoms can be linked to accommodative or binocular vision symptoms (eyestrain, eye ache, headache and blurred vision) and external ocular symptoms linked to dry eye (burning, watery eyes and irritation). This study aimed to investigate amplitude of accommodation under different light intensities in order to explore whether changes in light intensity aid effective accommodation function training. A total of 33 individuals ranging from (18-30) years who gave their full consent participated in this study. Amplitude of accommodation was measured using the minus lens to blur method and was compared between pre and post experiment under 3 different lighting levels (100 lux, 273 lux, 485 lux). Data were collected within November to December 2022, and analyzed by repeated measures ANOVA. The amplitude of accommodation was significantly increased between the initial AOA measurement and the AOA measurements under the three lighting levels (p< 0.01) The change in AOA was increased most at 100 lux followed by 273lux while the lowest AOA was recorded under 273 lux.                     The lowest lighting level (100 lux) caused the worst eye strain symptom as reported by 54.5% of total participants followed by 39.4% for 485lux and 24.2% for 273lux. The highest lighting level (485 lux) caused the worst glare symptom as reported by 76.2% of total participants followed by 6.1% (273lux). 66.7% of total participants were most satisfied with the medium lighting level (273 lux).
