ABSTRACT

The study examined the effect of jigsaw iv cooperative teaching method on the academic achievement of students in Business Studies in junior secondary schools in Ogun State, Nigeria. Three objectives where raised to guide the study, three research questions and three null hypotheses were postulated in line with the objectives. The study was conducted using quasi-experimental research design. The population of the study comprises of 982 JSSIII students from Ado-Odo Ota Local Government Area in Ogun State. The total of forty-six (46) students were sampled as experimental group, while forty-two (42) students were sampled as control group making the total of eighty-eight (88) students, comprising of forty (40) male and forty-eight (48) female students. Data for the study was collected through the pre-test, treatment and post-test using a Business Studies Achievement Test (BSAT) which comprises of forty multiple choice test items with four options (A-D). The content of the instrument BEAT were drawn from Basic School Certificate Examination (BSCE) past questions based on the topic to be taught in both groups. The instrument used had reliability coefficient of above the required threshold of 0.81 and was validated. Data collected were analyzed statistically using descriptive (mean and standard deviation), inferential statistics of independent sample t-test and ANCOVA. Result showed that there was significant difference in the academic achievement of students taught business studies using jigsaw iv cooperative method and those taught with conventional method and there was no significant difference in the extent to which gender difference affect the achievement of students taught business studies using jigsaw iv cooperative method in junior secondary schools in Ogun State among other finding. Based on the findings, recommendations were made that Jigsaw IV cooperative method should be incorporated into the teaching of Business studies at the junior secondary school level since it stimulate students to effectively learn and retain the concepts presented to them.
