ABSTRACT

Jatropha tanjorensis (Hospital too far) is a known plant because it possesses great properties that are very useful in medicine and in addition, they are very much available and affordable. All parts of the plant; the leaves, seed and even the bark are useful for traditional medicine and in veterinary medicine. This study evaluates the effect of methanolic leaf extract of Jatropha tanjorensison lipid profile and histology of the heart. Fifteen (15) adult male wistar rats divided into three groups (n=5) and weighing between 110g and 200g were used for the study. Group A was the control, Groups B and C were the test groups and received daily doses of 100mg/kg and 300mg/kg body weights of the methanolic leaf extract of Jatropha tanjorensis for 28 days respectively. Results from the lipid profile analysis showed that there was an increase in LDL in both low dose and high dose groups compared to control, with associated decrease in HDL in both low dose and high dose groups compared to control. However, these changes were not statistically significant. There was no significant difference in total cholesterol and triglyceride levels in both low and high dose groups compared to control. Histological analysis showed that administration of Jatropha tanjorensis leaf extract caused dilation of coronary artery and encouraged mobilization of lymphocyte. In conclusion, there was no significant change in the cholesterol levels. In the microscopic architecture of the heart, Jatropha tanjorensis leaf extract did not cause any toxic damage to the parenchymal cells of the heart
