ABSTRACT

The study evaluated how heavy metal pollution affects the removal efficiency of nitrite, nitrate, and organic nitrogen in an activated sludge system using iron. Blackwater from a residential source was used in two experimental setups, one as a control and the other containing iron salts. Physicochemical parameters such as temperature, pH, total dissolved solids, electrical conductivity, and oxidation-reduction potential were also examined. The results showed varying removal efficiencies for Nitrite removal efficiency for blackwater was 5.84% and 80.19% after 24 and 48 hours, respectively, whereas the removal efficiency for blackwater and iron was higher at 73.54% and 94.50% after 24 and 48 hours.
