ABSTRACT
The study focused on the effect of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on staff capacity building in academic libraries (John Harris library). The study’s goal was targeted at examining the role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in enhancing staff capacity building in academic libraries. investigating the effect of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on staff capacity building in academic libraries, assessing the impact of ICT on staff capacity building in academic libraries, identifying the challenges encountered by academic library staff in using ICT for capacity building and identifying the strategies for overcoming the challenges in implementing ICT for capacity
The study adopted the use of descriptive survey research design, and the population used for this study was 87 librarians of which 30 are professionals and 57 are non-professional staff, the entire population was used as sample of the study. Questionnaire titled” effect of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on staff capacity building in academic libraries” were drawn and administered, (80) copies were retrieved from the respondents and found worthy of use. The study findings highlight the significant roles and effects of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on staff capacity building in academic libraries. ICT facilitates access to learning resources, ICT also boosts staff productivity, improves problem-solving abilities, and fosters collaborative networks for knowledge-sharing. Furthermore, ICT has reshaped staff training, improved workload management, and raised awareness of information security issues. However, challenges such as budget constraints, inadequate infrastructure, limited technical expertise, and data privacy concerns hinder effective implementation of ICT-driven capacity-building programs.
In conclusion,the study underscores the transformative role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in enhancing staff capacity building in academic libraries. ICT has not only facilitated access to learning resources and improved collaboration but has also empowered library staff with the technical and problem-solving skills necessary to meet the demands of modern information systemsThe following recommendations were given in light of this study, Academic libraries should advocate for more budgetary allocations to acquire and maintain modern ICT infrastructure that supports capacity-building initiatives, Libraries should invest in upgrading their technological infrastructure, including high-speed internet, modern hardware, and reliable software, to ensure smooth ICT operations and capacity-building programs, Regular and targeted ICT training programs should be organized for library staff to keep them updated with evolving technologies and enhance their technical competencies.
