ABSTRACT
Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is a well-known toxic compound capable of inflicting severe internal organ damage upon ingestion by both animals and humans. Its mechanisms of harm involve inducing inflammation, cellular destruction, heightened hormone and biomarker release, ultimately leading to organ dysfunction, particularly in the kidneys and livers. It is theorized that Chasmanthara dependens may contain active phytochemicals with the potential to mitigate or resolve kidney toxicity resulting from carbon tetrachloride ingestion. In this research study, Wistar rats served as the test subjects and were intentionally exposed to carbon tetrachloride to induce kidney toxicity. Treatment groups were administered either silymarin or a hydro-ethanolic extract of Chasmanthara dependens, allowing for an evaluation of Chasmanthara dependens effectiveness. The results obtained demonstrated a significant elevation in kidney biomarkers following carbon tetrachloride exposure, while there was a slight reduction in these biomarkers in the Wistar rats treated with Chasmanthara dependens and silymarin, indicating a potential ameliorative effect of Chasmanthara dependens on kidney toxicity.
