ABSTRACT
Phthalates are widely used as plastic additives in the industry. Dibutyl Phthalate is a ubiquitous plasticizer utilized in the production of flexible polyvinyl chloride (PVC) materials, plastics and cosmetic products. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of aqueous-methanol seed extract of Hunteria umbellata plant on antioxidant parameters in the liver of Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) exposed rats. Forty-seven (47) male Wistar rats were utilized in this study and grouped into Group 1: Control Group. Group 2 (DBP500 mg): Administered with 500 mg/kg of Dibutyl Phthalate, Group 3 (DBP500 mg/kg+ HSE 300 mg/kg): Administered with DBP 500mg/kg + 300 mg/kg Hunteria umbellata Seed Extract, Group 4 (DBP500 mg/kg+ HSE 600mg/kg): Administered with DBP 500 mg/kg + 600 mg/kg Hunteria umbellata Seed Extract and Group 5 (HSE 600 mg/kg): Administered with 600 mg/kg Hunteria umbellata Seed Extract. After 28 days of administration, the experimental rats were sacrificed and biochemical analysis was carried out on the liver to determine the SOD, MDA and CAT activities. Results from this study showed that SOD and CAT activities were significantly (P< 0.05) reduced in experimental groups administered with DBP500 mg/kg, DBP500 mg/kg+ HSE 300 mg/kg and DBP500 mg/kg+ HSE 600mg/kg when compared to control group.
