ABSTRACT

Groundnut oil was used for the vegetative growth of the Wood ear mushroom, Auricularia auricula, (A. auricula). The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of groundnut oil on the vegetative growth of this mushroom. The experiment consisted of pure culture media; groundnut oil, potato dextrose agar, having nine different concentrations (3%, 2%, 1%, 0.8%, 0.6%, 0.4%, 0.2%, 0.1%, 0%) replicated five times. Potato Dextrose Agar served as the control for agar medium. Mycelia spread, cultural characteristics and mycelia density rating were evaluated. The highest mean value for the mycelia extension relative to the control (0%) was given by 0.8% concentration. In addition, the lowest significant increase (p<0.05) in mycelia extension vis a vis the control was shown by 3% concentration treatment group. The result demonstrates the possible use of groundnut oil of 0.8% concentration for the cultivation of Auricularia auricula which will give room for the proper mycelia growth of the mushroom.
