ABSTRACT

Ganoderma lucidum and Pleurotus ostreatus are mushrooms known for their medicinal and nutritional value. The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of the seeds of Greenwayodendrum suaveolens as a supplement for the growth of G. lucidum and Pleurotus ostreatus. Growth of both mushrooms were investigated on sawdust substrate, and on potato dextrose agar supplemented with the powdered and extracts of the seed respectively. Supplementation was done at 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% respectively. In sawdust substrate, it was observed that G. lucidum with higher supplement levels had shorter time of colonization. The time for half mycelia colonization was faster at 25% (14.20±0.2) days for G. lucidum while it took P. ostreatus shorter time (15.20±0.7) to reach 50% colonization for those without supplementation. The highest fresh weight (204.0g) was recorded for G. lucidum at 15% while it was least (50.0g) on the control substrate. The biological efficiency was also highest at 15% supplementation (58.29%) and least (14.40%) for control substrate.
