EFFECT OF FUNCTIONAL EXERCISE (SIX MINUTES WALK TEST) ON OBESE INDIVIDUALS

ABSTRACT

The six-minute walk test (6MWT) is a cheap, simple, straightforward, noninvasive field test used to evaluate patients with various cardiopulmonary disorders and their functional exercise capacity. It is also a submaximal exercise that assesses one's functional exercise capacity and tolerance to physical activities. The sixminute walk test involves a person walking at their normal walking pace on a 30- meter hallway in 6 minutes. This study aims to investigate the effects of functional exercise specifically through the six-minute walk test (6MWT), on obese individuals, focusing on variables such as oxygen saturation (SpO2), perceived exertion, and the distance covered. A total of 34 obese subjects aged 18-28 years from the University of Benin, participated in this study. The subjects' Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated before the test while the baseline perceived exertion and oxygen saturation were measured pre- and post-the-six-minute walk test. The number of laps walked was counted, recorded and then multiplied by 60 meters to get the total number of meters walked. The statistical analysis was performed with Graph Pad Prism Version 8.1. The standard error of the mean (SEM) was used in tables and graphs to display the results. The dependent and independent variable means were compared using the student t-test. P<0.05 was accepted as significant. The results show an insightful observation that after the 6-minute walk test, perceived exertion (Borg scale) increased significantly, but oxygen saturation levels remained unchanged. There were no significant correlations between distance covered and perceived exertion or physiological responses.
