ABSTRACT
Annona muricata L. is a tropical plant species known for its edible fruit with medicinal merits and toxicological effects. This work was carried out to determine the effect of ethyl acetate leaf extracts on glucose concentration and liver function with specific enzymes alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), albumin, and total protein studied on rats. The rats varying from 150 - 200g body weights were grouped into 5 compartments with five animals per group. A fasting blood sample was collected by a Tail puncture for glucose estimation on a weekly basis. ● Group I (Normal control) ● Group 2 (STZ + Negative control) ● Group 3 STZ + metformin 250mg/kg body weight) ● Group 4 (STZ + 250mg/kg body weight ethyl acetate extract) ● Group 5 (STZ +500mg/kg body weight ethyl acetate extract). Blood was collected after 28 days of administration and liver tissues were taken for biochemical studies, Plasma was assayed for liver enzymes. Results showed a non-significant increase in liver function parameters, ALT, AST, albumin, and total protein. Mild alterations in elevated AST levels were observed at the highest dose. This result suggests that although the use of the leaf extracts of annona muricata is relatively safe, hepatic toxicity may occur with prolonged use.
