ABSTRACT
The present project investigated the potential effects of ethanolic extract of Tetrapleura tetraptera (Aridan) on liver function parameters in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver damage. CCl4 is a well-known hepatotoxic agent that induces oxidative stress and disrupts liver functions. This study employs an animal model. The rats were divided into five groups.Group 1 were the normal control rats, Group 2 were negative control rats, Group 3 were positive control rats, Group 4 rats were rats treated with 250mg/kg of the Tetrapleura tetraptera extract, and Group 5 rats were treated with 500mg/kg of the extract, group 2-5 were induced with ccl4 intraperitoneally.The liver parameters essayed for where, Total protein, Globulin, Albumin and bilirubin, Data was analysed and the result showed that Total protein and Albumin levels were significantly increased (p<0.05) when compared to groups not treated with the extract, with 250mg/kg having the most effect .Whereas we observed a non statistically significant difference in globulin (p>0.05), there was a significant decrease in bilirubin levels(p<0.05) in the rats treated with 250mg/kg of the extract.The result of this project shows that ethanolic extract of Tetrapleura tetraptera hepatoprotective functions.
