EFFECT OF EGGROLL AND CARBONATED DRINK CONSUMPTION

ABSTRACT

Due to their deliciousness and convenience, eggrolls and carbonated beverages are common eating options among university students. Understanding the influence of these foods on renal health is essential since they frequently have low nutritional content and may contain additives that could have detrimental effects on kidney function. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential effects of eggroll and carbonated drink consumption on renal function parameters among students at the University of Benin (UNIBEN). Fifty participants were recruited for this study. The parameters included urea, creatinine and electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride and bicarbonate). Urea was analyzed by the urease-berthelot method, creatinine was analyzed using the Jaffe technique, sodium and potassium ions were analyzed by flame photometry, chloride and bicarbonate were analyzed using the Schales and Schales method and acid-base back titration, respectively. Commercially prepared reagents were used in this study. The data generated were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21.0 (IBM Inc. USA). The results from the study showed that there was no significant difference in urea and creatinine values after coke and eggroll consumption (12.83±6.14, 0.49±0.11 respectively) when compared to before consumption (12.98±4.99, 0.53±0.10) (p>0.05). Sodium showed no significant change after consumption (137.73±2.43) when compared to before consumption (136.83±2.05) (p>0.05). Potassium was significantly higher after consumption of coke and eggroll (3.88±0.34) when compared to before consumption (3.63±0.18) (p<0.05). Chloride showed no significant change after consumption of coke and eggroll (102.67±2.55) when compared to before consumption (102.00±2.72) (p>0.05). Bicarbonate was significantly higher after consumption of coke and eggroll (24.13±3.10) when compared to before consumption (21.63±1.65) (p<0.05). In conclusion, a significant difference was observed in potassium and bicarbonate values which may be suggestive of electrolyte imbalance. Further studies on the mechanism behind these changes will provide greater insight on the effect of these dietary choices on renal health.
