EFFECT OF EDUCATIONALLY CERTIFIED TEACHERS ON PHYSICS STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN ISOKO SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, DELTA STATE.

ABSTRACT

This study was on "Effect of Educationally Certified Teachers on the Academic Performance of Students in Physics." The study was carried out in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of educationally certified teachers on the performance of students in Physics in external examination WAEC, SSCE and NECO. Specifically, the study seeks to compare the academic performance of students taught by certified teachers and those taught by non-certified teachers. It also compares the academic performance of students taught by experienced teachers and those taught by inexperienced teachers, and compares the academic performance of students taught by high qualified teachers and those taught by low qualified teachers. The researcher used a descriptive survey method. The study employed Ex Post Facto Design. The population of the study is made up of 633 wherein 17 were teachers and 616 were students. The sample for the study consisted of 9 Senior Secondary Schools and their Physics teachers who were randomly chosen through a purposive technique across the Local Government Area. The instrument used was a structured questionnaire and Face and content validation was used. Percentages and frequencies were used to analyze bio-data of respondents and the research questions raised for this study. Statistical t-test was used to test the hypothesis raised for this study at 5% significance level. The findings revealed that students taught by certified teachers in physics education perform higher than students taught by non-certified teachers in physics. Also, it was revealed that students taught by teachers with extensive experience perform better than those taught by less experienced teachers. The study further revealed that students who were taught by high qualified teachers have higher performances than those students taught by non-qualified teachers of low qualification. The researcher recommends that teachers with professional qualification(s) at higher level should teach Physics in the secondary schools. Also, employment of Physics teachers into secondary school should be based on merit and qualification, and practicing Physics teachers who are not educational should undergo in service training such as seminars, Post Graduate Diploma Course in Education e.t.c. for effective discharge or dissemination of knowledge
