Abstract

Probiotics are live microorganisms, nonpathogenic which when taken in sufficient amount confer health benefit to the host. Lactic acid bacteria are the primary source of probiotic-associated microorganisms. Lactobacillus species are a significant component of the microbiota in numerous body areas, including the digestive system and the female reproductive system, in both humans and animals. When a medicine is poorly soluble, solubilizing agents are used to increase the solubility of the drug and hence why dipropylene glycol was used.  The aim of the research is to determine the effects of dipropylene glycol on desorption of lactobacillus rhamnosus, gasseri, and reuteri using solidified albumen and egg membrane as the adsorbents. Dipropylene glycol was prepared in varying concentrations (100%, 75%, 50%, 25, 12.5%) to investigate its ability in the desorption of already adhered lactobacillus species from solidified albumen and egg membrane after incubation at 370c for 48hours in MRS medium.  The study showed that25% concentration of dipropylene glycol had the optimal desorption yield of lactobacillus gasseri, using solidified albumen as adsorbents while 12.5% concentration yield optimal desorption of Lactobacillus gasseri using egg membrane.
